The Undisputed Truth came together in Detroit around 1969, evolving from a local vocal group called The Originals. Norman Whitfield took over as lead singer and gave the band its new name, steering them toward a sound that mixed soul with funk and psychedelic rock. Their first album in 1971 included 'Smiling Faces Sometimes,' which became their best-known track.
Whitfield wrote most of their material, and the band recorded several albums in the early 1970s like 'Face to Face with the Truth' and 'Method to the Madness.' They also sang backing vocals on The Temptations' 'Papa Was a Rollin' Stone,' another Whitfield composition.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
