A Canadian band whose complex arrangements and avant-garde influences created challenging, atmospheric soundscapes.
For a good sense of their sound, try 'Mechanical Phoenix' or 'Feasting Fools'. They're both dense, but that's the point.
Unexpect's music never settled for easy listening. Their 2010 album 'Mechanical Phoenix' gave us the sprawling title track, and songs like 'Feasting Fools' and 'In Velvet Coffins We Sleep' show how they layered electronics and metal into something genuinely strange. They kept at it for nearly two decades, right through to 2022's 'Obscura'.
They formed in 2003 and put out 'Fables of the Sleepless Empire' in 2008. The 2010 album 'Mechanical Phoenix' was a key release, and they kept working in that textured, atmospheric lane through 2016's 'In the Absence of Light' and beyond.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
