Ungu formed in Cilegon, Banten in 1995 with Enda Ungu and Onci Kurniawan on guitars and Pasha Van Krab on vocals. They were joined by Makki Parikesit on bass and Rowman Azis on drums. Their debut album "Laguku" came out in 1999 and included the song "Demi Waktu."

That first album established them as a popular Indonesian pop band. They went on to release other albums like "Surga Mu" in 2004 and "Untukmu Selamanya" in 2007. Some of their well-known songs include "Dengan Nafas Mu," "Jika Itu Yang Terbaik," and "Cinta Dalam Hati."

In 2011, Pasha Van Krab left the band to pursue politics. Ungu continued with a new vocalist, Sigit Purnomo. They released more albums in the following years, including "Aku Bukan Pilihan Hatimu" in 2015 and "Love Is U" in 2021.
