United State of Mind formed in Los Angeles in the early 1990s around vocalist William 'Billy' Kray and guitarist Sam 'Ace' Frost. They put out their first album 'Aether' in 1995, which found a small audience with its moody, inward-looking songs. The track 'Without Me Martha' from their second record became a genuine hit, landing in the top ten on several charts and pulling the band into wider notice.
Their music shifted over the next few albums, taking on a heavier, more abrasive quality that mixed in industrial textures. This turn divided listeners, with some longtime fans feeling the band had moved away from the sound that first drew them in. Songs like 'Fly' and 'I Don't Care' reflected this darker, more experimental phase.
Their live shows gained a reputation for being intentionally provocative, sometimes escalating to the point where they were no longer welcome at certain venues. They released six studio albums in total, along with a couple of live records and various singles.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
