Universo Alternativo formed in Argentina in the early 1990s with Leonardo Amato on vocals and guitar, Ariel Minimal on bass, Javier Weyler on drums, and Jorge Minissale on keyboards. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1995, mixing rock and folk with Latin rhythms. The band's sound was often described as ethereal, especially on songs like 'Serafina' and 'Passos Errados'.
In 1997, they released 'Serafina,' which became their most recognizable track. The song's lyrics, written by Amato, told a mystical story that some listeners found unsettling, though the band never commented much on the rumors that followed. They put out several more albums, including 'El Mar de las Sonrisas' in 1997 and 'Leyendas' in 2000.
Minissale left the group in 2003, and Amato faced some personal difficulties around that time. The band kept recording, with 'Sinfonías' arriving in 2003 and 'El Álbum Secreto' in 2009. Their later work included tracks like 'Promessas de Uma Outra Paixão' and 'Seu Retrato,' which maintained the atmospheric quality of their earlier material.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
