Upa Dance formed in 1990 with Thomas Anders on vocals, Michael Thomas on keyboards, and Mark Ashley producing and playing bass. Their debut album 'The Magic of Upa Dance' came out in 1992 and included their most recognizable track, 'How Deep Is Your Love.' That song became a worldwide hit, though there were some plagiarism allegations around it that the band had to navigate.
They kept releasing albums through the 1990s and early 2000s, with titles like 'Love Is Love' in 1994 and 'Millennium' in 1999. Other songs in their catalog include 'Cómo Voy a Escapar de Aquí,' 'Si te Tengo Aqui,' and 'Baila Morena.' Their sound mixed pop with dance rhythms, and it found listeners across different genres.
At some point the band stopped performing together, but their music, particularly 'How Deep Is Your Love,' still gets played. It's one of those songs that turned up at weddings and on radio playlists, sticking around longer than the group itself did.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
