Updake formed in Salvador, Bahia in the early 1980s. The group included vocalist and songwriter Zeca Bahia, guitarist Alexandre Becker, bassist Luis Menezes, drummer Cuca, and percussionist Jorge Alfredo. They released their debut album "Axé Bahia" in 1984.
Their song "Ela, Ele e Eu" came out in 1986 and became widely known. Another track, "Punhais," appears among their work. The band put out albums like "Cabôclica" in 1986 and "Pureza" in 1990.
Some critics questioned their blend of traditional and modern elements at first, but the group kept working with Brazilian rhythms. Their music reached listeners outside Brazil.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
