Upfive formed in São Paulo with five musicians: Anderson Freire, Gustavo Soares, Rafael Bitencourt, Samuel Mizrahy, and Bruno Souza. They started making contemporary Christian music together, working through the usual early challenges of a new band.
Their debut album was called 'Acústico,' which had a stripped-down, intimate feel. Later records like 'Além Do Véu' and 'Para Quem Tem Fé' brought in more sounds, touching on folk and pop while keeping their worship focus. Songs like 'Bota Fé No Pai' and 'Filho' became familiar in Brazilian gospel circles.
Anderson Freire handled most of the lead vocals and wrote many of their lyrics. Gustavo Soares played guitar and sang harmonies, Rafael Bitencourt was on drums, Samuel Mizrahy played keyboards, and Bruno Souza played bass. They kept at it as a five-piece for their main run of albums.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
