Up's formed in Porto in 1986 with Paulo Gonzo on vocals, Miguel Gameiro on guitar, Ze Pedro on bass, and Nuno Gonçalves on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out the following year and included what became one of their best-known songs, "Dias passaram." That track's particular blend of melody and emotion gave them an early foothold in Portuguese music.
They followed with more singles like "Remar, Remar" and "A Vida Não Pára," and by 1991 they were trying different approaches on the album "Como Se Fosse a Primeira Vez." The band's lineup changed later in the decade when Ze Pedro left, which led to some legal complications. Through it all they kept writing, with songs like "Meu lugar" and "Tudo acabou" rounding out their catalog.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
