Uroboros formed in the late 2000s with Leila Aelwyn on vocals and lyrics, Ethan Rayne on guitar, Marcus Steele on bass, and Kieran Frost on drums. Their music pulled from alternative rock and post-punk, but with enough electronic textures and odd time signatures to keep it from sounding like anything else. They put out four albums between 2009 and 2018, starting with 'Serpent's Tongue' and ending with 'Ashes'.
Their track 'Black Swallowtail' became a signature piece, built around a hypnotic melody and Aelwyn's lyrics about cycles and transformation. Other songs like 'Zodiac' and 'Red Moon' carried that same atmospheric weight. The band never explained much about their themes, which led to some fan speculation about hidden meanings, but they mostly kept quiet and let the music speak.
They developed a dedicated following without much industry fuss, and their live shows sometimes featured guest violinists or keyboard players to flesh out the sound. After 'Ashes' in 2018, they haven't been especially active, but songs like 'From Hell' and 'Luminous' still turn up in playlists for people who like their music a little haunted and out of step.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
