Usurper formed in San Francisco in the late 1980s with guitarist Ricky Myers, bassist Jeff Jurgens, and drummer Dave Chavarri. Their music often dealt with themes of the macabre and the unknown, which sometimes put them at odds with more conventional metal audiences. The track "Reptilian" became particularly known for its exploration of alien conspiracy theories.
Their catalog includes songs like "1666 A.D.," "Anno Satanas," and "Black Funeral," which carried forward their interest in dark, atmospheric themes. The band maintained a consistent lineup over time, with Myers, Jurgens, and Chavarri continuing to work together on their material.
While they never achieved mainstream commercial success, Usurper developed a dedicated following within the metal underground.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
