UTFO came out of Brooklyn in the mid-1980s as a trio of Kangol Kid, Mix Master Ice, and Educated Rapper. They started as breakdancers and graffiti artists before moving into music. Their debut album in 1984 included 'Roxanne, Roxanne,' a track that got some attention for how it handled a story about unrequited love with a female narrator.
They put out a few more albums like 'Skeezer Pleezer' in 1986 and 'Lethal Weapon' in 1987. Some of their other songs from that time include 'Ask Yo Mama,' 'Fairy Tale Lover,' and 'Doin' it.' The group's lineup changed later when Mix Master Ice left toward the end of the decade.
Their later work didn't find the same audience as those early records. But that first album and 'Roxanne, Roxanne' in particular still get mentioned when people talk about that period in hip-hop.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
