Archive material and source history
Valdir José dos Santos, known as Valdinho do Acordeon, was born in Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. He started playing accordion early, drawing from traditional forró rhythms and performing at local festivals. In the late 1980s, he signed with a record label and released his debut album 'De Norte à Sul' in 1991, with the title track becoming a major hit.
His music often mixed forró with sertanejo and samba, heard on albums like 'O Rumo do Amor' from 1994 and 'O Forró do Milênio' from 2000. Songs such as 'Maresia' and 'Mulher Carente' show his style. His band included family members like his son Valdir Jr. on bass and brother Antônio José on drums, and he worked with artists including Elba Ramalho and Wesley Safadão.
In 2004, Valdinho was in a car accident that killed three band members, leading him to step back from music for a time. He later returned to performing. His song 'De Norte à Sul' remains widely recognized in Brazilian music.
