Valdir Brito came up in Serrinha, Bahia, picking up music from his father's guitar without much formal training. In the early 1970s, producer Aloysio Reis signed him, and his debut album 'Ferro em Brasa' came out in 1972. That record put him on the map with a sound that mixed samba, bossa nova, and forró.
His voice had a particular quality that worked well with introspective lyrics about love and loss. The song 'A Sua Indecisão' from 1983 became his most recognizable track, but he also recorded others like 'É Assim' and 'Feito Furacão'. He worked with musicians including guitarist Nelson Angelo and percussionist Mestre Neco.
Brito's outspoken nature and some of his lyrics drew criticism over time, with accusations of misogyny and homophobia. He kept recording through the 1970s and into the 1980s with albums like 'Quebradeiras' and 'Um Samba Para Semente'. In 2015, he received the Ordem do Mérito Cultural.
