Archive material and source history
Valdir Lopes came up in São Paulo's Jardim Primavera neighborhood, born in 1962. He started singing on the streets, pulling from samba and funk. By the mid-1980s he had a band with Marcos André on guitar, Alexandre de Souza on bass, and José Carlos on drums.
In 1996 they put out their debut album, also called 'Coysa Kom Coysa.' The title track caught on as a dancefloor hit, mixing samba and funk with some electronic touches. It became his signature song, though he also recorded others like 'Crônica de Breque' and 'Favelagem.'
Lopes had an eccentric stage presence that sometimes drew attention away from the music.
