A Portuguese band that mixed Beatles-inspired sounds with local satire in the 1960s and 70s.
For a quick sense of them, try "Somente Ela" or "Pinto Pequeno", one's a driving pop track, the other a sharp political satire.
They were part of a wave of Portuguese groups in the 1960s trying to move beyond traditional fado, looking to the Beatles and folk revival for something more current. Their 1971 single "Pinto Pequeno" became a hit with its satirical take on political corruption, showing how they blended international pop with their own perspective. You can hear their range on tracks like the ballad "Ainda Penso Em Você" or the more driving "Somente Ela" from their top songs.
Os Valetes formed in Lisbon in 1964 with José Barata Ribeiro on vocals, Carlos Mendes on guitar, Fernando Mendes on bass, and Joaquim Costa on drums. They released albums through the 1960s and into the 1970s, including their self-titled debut in 1965 and the "Pinto Pequeno" album in 1971.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
