Valnei Gomes was born in Itaúna, Minas Gerais in 1960. He started as a choirboy before picking up the guitar and writing songs. In the early 1980s, he began working with guitarist Beno César.

Together they wrote "Bandeira Americana," a ballad about Brazilian immigrants that came out in 1986. The song became a national hit. They recorded several albums together, including Noites Quentes and Caminhos do Interior.

Gomes also recorded songs like "Coração," "Fé Em Deus," and "Liberte-Me." He performed with a band that included Lelo Zanetti on bass and Serginho Rezende on drums.
