A late-'90s band that mixed grunge, psychedelia, and electronica with raw energy.
If you're new to them, 'Jewels' and 'Darkness' give a good sense of their sound. Both are on that debut album 'Crimson Velvet'.
Their 2001 debut 'Crimson Velvet' had a hit single called 'Jewels', where Anya Marina's vocals got compared to Siouxsie Sioux. Songs like 'Darkness' and 'Drugfuck' leaned into heavy themes, which drew both praise and criticism. The name itself, Vampires On Tomato Juice, hinted at that blend of dark and playful elements they were known for.
They formed in New York City in the late 1990s and put out albums like 'Whispers of the Night' in 2003 and 'Dance of the Damned' in 2006. Guitarist Ethan James left in 2007, and the band disbanded in 2012, with members moving into solo work and film scoring afterward.
