Vanderlei Oliveira

Vanderlei Oliveira came from Caetanópolis in Minas Gerais, a rural area that shaped his approach to music. He taught himself guitar and worked with the sounds of sertanejo, a Brazilian country style. In the early 1980s, he put out his first album, which took its name from the song 'Se Cachaça For Veneno.' That track became his most recognizable piece, speaking plainly about life's difficulties with a directness that connected with many listeners.

His writing often dealt with working-class experiences without much ornament. Songs like '24 Horas' and 'Dança Moreninha' carried the same straightforward delivery, built on simple guitar patterns and unadorned vocals. The music avoided studio polish, keeping a rough, immediate quality that fit the subjects he was singing about.

Oliveira recorded steadily through the 1980s and into the 1990s, with albums like 'Festa na Penha' in 1985 and 'Pedrada no Telhado' in 1993.
