Vanguarda formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1960s, blending samba rhythms with rock elements. Their 1969 song "Estrela do Mar" became a hit, and they released a self-titled debut album that same year. The group included Jorge Ben Jor on vocals and guitar, along with Zé Carlos on bass, Marçal on drums, Dom Salvador on percussion, and Claudio Roditi on trumpet.
They continued recording through the early 1970s with albums like "A Tábua de Esmeralda" in 1971 and "O Bicho" in 1975, mixing samba with funk and soul influences.
Other songs in their catalog include "Filme de Amor," "A Menina Dos Meus Olhos," and "É Proibido Fumar." Their approach to combining samba and rock influenced later Brazilian music styles.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
