Vânia Barros came up in Salvador, Bahia, where she absorbed the Afro-Brazilian musical traditions around her. Her debut album 'Cantos de Guerra' arrived in 1976, during a period of political repression in Brazil. The record's raw sound found an audience, and she became known for songs that addressed identity and social justice.
In 1977 she released 'Sonho Zumbi,' a song inspired by the resistance leader Zumbi dos Palmares. Its lyrics about freedom connected with Brazil's Black consciousness movement, and it became something of an anthem.
She worked with musicians like Carlinhos Brown and Gilberto Gil over time. Later albums included 'A Terra e Meu Tambor' in 1982 and 'Bem-Vinda' in 2006.
