Velha Arte do Samba formed in 1976 in Rio de Janeiro, a group of samba enthusiasts who built their sound around the traditions of the Mangueira samba school. Their song "Atrás da Verde e Rosa Só Não Vai Quem Já Morreu" became something of an anthem for Mangueira's followers, a straightforward declaration of loyalty to the school's green and pink colors.
They released their first album in 1980 and put out records like "A Música do Povo" in 1986. Their lyrics sometimes stirred things up, like with the song "Camisa 10 da Mangueira," which took aim at the school's leadership and drew some criticism. They kept at it, and by 1995 that signature song had caught on more widely, giving them a national audience.
Later albums included "O Samba Não Morre" in 2002 and "Nos Braços da Velha" in 2010. Their music stayed rooted in that community sound, the kind that gets played in the streets and halls around Mangueira.
