Background notes

Archive material and source history

Velvet Morning formed in New York City in the 1960s around pianist Michael Corby and vocalist Nancy Lamott. They released their self-titled debut album in 1969, which got some critical attention but didn't sell particularly well. The band kept at it through the early 1970s, putting out records like 'Velvet' in 1971 and 'In the Garden' in 1973.

Their best-known song is 'You're Blue I'm Blue,' a quiet, melancholic piece that became a kind of low-key standard for listeners drawn to its mood. The lineup also included Bob Bullock on guitar, Paul Pignataro on bass, and Doug Hall on drums. They made one more album, 'Velvet Morning II,' in 1977 before fading from view.
