Venice Under Water

Venice Under Water came together in Los Angeles in the early 2000s, with Carlton "Cosmo" Rivera on vocals and guitar, Diego Rose on bass, and Sergio Vasquez on drums. They played small shows around town while working out a sound that mixed alternative rock with some electronic touches. Their first real attention came with the 2006 single "Half Dead," which had a quiet, haunting quality that connected with listeners. Some found its subject matter unsettling, but it became a cult favorite and helped them land a record deal.

Their debut album, "The Lost Tapes," arrived in 2008, followed by "Damaged Goods" in 2011. Songs like "Hyena" and "Rapture" showed their range, from tense, driving rock to more atmospheric moments. They toured fairly steadily in those years, sometimes opening for bigger acts like Interpol and Death Cab for Cutie. The band's live shows were known for being intense and emotionally raw, which built them a dedicated following.

Cosmo Rivera's lyrics often dealt with feeling isolated or adrift, a theme that ran through much of their work. Tracks like "New ID" and "Without Me You're Everything" kept that mood going, balancing melody with a kind of frayed energy. They never became mainstream stars, but for a certain slice of the 2000s indie scene, Venice Under Water's music felt like a genuine reflection of that time's quieter anxieties.
