Venin Noir came up through the Paris underground. Their lineup includes vocalist Sauron, guitarist Morgoth, rhythm guitarist Necromancer, and bassist Daemon, with an anonymous drummer. They put out their first album, Nocturnal Insurgence, in 2005.

Their songs like Better Days Never Come and Buried Alive work with heavy riffs and lyrics that lean into darker themes. The 2008 concept album Black Plague continued in that direction. Their stage shows have sometimes drawn attention for being confrontational.
