Archive material and source history
Vern Gosdin was born in Woodland Hills, California in 1934. By the time he was sixteen, he had his own band playing local honky-tonks, drawing from the sounds of Hank Williams, George Jones, and Ernest Tubb.
He signed with Columbia Records in 1968, releasing his debut single 'Hangin' On.' Later recordings like 'I Can Tell by the Way You Dance' and 'Yesterday's Gone' helped build his reputation. In the 1970s and 1980s, he had a string of top-10 hits including 'Set 'Em Up Joe,' 'I Just Can't Get Over You,' and 'Chiseled in Stone.'
In 1976, he released 'Jesus Hold My Hand,' a song he wrote with his brother Rex. Its straightforward lyrics about seeking comfort resonated with listeners. It became one of his most enduring recordings, alongside songs like '24 Hour Heartache' and 'A Picture Of Me Without You.'
