Background notes

Archive material and source history

Vertical Rising formed in the mid-1990s with Ethan James on vocals, Jake Hayes on guitar, Mike Jones on bass, and Ryan Carter on drums. Their debut album 'Ember' came out in 1997, followed by 'Aether' two years later. That second album included 'Frontiers,' which got regular radio play and became their best-known song.

They put out two more albums, 'Zenith' in 2002 and 'Horizon' in 2005. The band had a reputation for being outspoken and sometimes clashing with industry expectations, but they kept making music on their own terms. Another track people remember is 'Garden Of Souls.'

By the time 'Horizon' arrived, they'd been at it for about a decade. Their sound had that alternative rock feel from the era they started in, with songs that mixed big melodies and more personal lyrics.
