Vespas Mandarinas formed in Recife, Brazil in the early 2000s. The band included Zé Peixe on lead vocals and guitar, Felipe S. Melo on bass, Fred Oliveira on drums, and Jorge Du Peixe handling backing vocals, percussion, and samplers. They released their self-titled debut album in 2004, followed by 'A Sétima Efervescência' in 2006.
Their third album, 'Não Sei o Que Fazer Comigo' from 2010, gave them their breakthrough. The title track became a hit, with its hypnotic quality and lyrics about self-discovery finding an audience. Other songs from that period like 'Distraídos Venceremos' and 'Cobra de Vidro' show their mix of rock, funk, and experimental rhythms.
They kept releasing albums through the 2010s, including 'Cactus' in 2013 and 'Mantra' in 2016. Their lyrics often touched on themes that drew criticism from conservative groups, though they continued performing. Songs like 'Santa Sampa' and 'O Inimigo' appeared in their later work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
