Vhöl formed in Berlin in 2013 as a trio with Martin Gutmann on vocals and guitar, Markus Wenzel on bass, and Daniel Herzog on drums. Their music pulls from heavy metal, black metal, and doom, with Gutmann's vocals often described as haunting over Wenzel's bass and Herzog's drumming.
Their debut album 'The Wall' came out in 2015, and the title track became something of a cult song for its brooding take on mental anguish and societal limits. Other songs from that period include 'Arising,' 'Grace,' and 'Insane With Faith.'
After 'The Wall,' they put out 'Deeper Than Sky' in 2017, 'Wanderer' in 2019, and 'The Beast Lurking in the Shadows' in 2022. Gutmann's struggles with mental health led to a break in 2016, but the band kept working. They've built a following that responds to the raw, introspective quality in their music, without softening the edges.
