Background notes

Archive material and source history

Via Rock came out of Rio de Janeiro's rock scene in the early 1980s. The band was led by Paulo Ricardo, with Chico Sant'Anna on bass, Marcelo Bonfá on drums, and Kiko Martinez on keyboards. Their first album didn't catch on, but things changed with their second record, 'Ompacto,' in 1982.

That album had the single 'Ou Não,' which became a hit across Brazil. The song's mix of a catchy melody and a message about self-determination connected with a lot of young listeners at the time. It helped make the band nationally known.

Other songs from that period, like 'Bálsamo' and 'Festa De Verão,' also got attention. The group toured heavily during those years, playing to large crowds. Their sound pulled from hard rock and pop, with lyrics that often turned inward.
