His 1985 album 'Arte de Ser Sertão' became particularly well-known.
Some listeners questioned whether his music authentically represented sertão culture, but he continued performing in that style. He released several other albums through the 1990s and 2000s, including 'O Canto da Terra' in 1990 and 'Meus Caminhos' in 2005.
His songs often dealt with life in the sertão, and 'Arte de Ser Sertão' became something of an anthem for people from that region.
