Victory at Sea started in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s, originally called The Vectors. The group had Chris Gilpin on vocals and keyboards, Steve Davit on guitar, Dave Cochran on bass, and Joe Berardi on drums. They played a lot of local shows before catching a break.

Producer Jack Douglas heard a demo and signed them, which is when they became Victory at Sea. Their first album, "All Night Superstar," came out in 1978 and did well. That title track and songs like "Angel" and "Animals And The Weather" got them some attention. They put out a few more records, including "The New Adventures" and "Victory at Sea III."

Gilpin and Davit left the band in the early 1980s, and Cochran and Berardi kept going with different musicians. Victory at Sea stopped putting out new music by the mid-1980s.
