Vienna was a synth-pop duo from Austria active in the 1980s, consisting of keyboardist and vocalist Klaus Derendorf and drummer Gerald Vandrlik. Their debut album 'Vienna' came out in 1981 and included the song 'Alone,' which became their best-known track. They released several more albums through the decade, including 'At Night' in 1982 and 'The Art of War' in 1984, before Vandrlik died in 1988.
Their music often had a brooding, minimalist quality, with Derendorf's vocals floating over simple keyboard arrangements. Songs like 'Alone,' 'Lie,' and 'Mistakes' from their catalog typify that atmospheric, introspective style. They weren't especially prolific with hits, but 'Alone' did well in some European charts when it was new.
The duo's final album, 'Blue Moon,' arrived in 1989. After that, Vienna effectively ended, though their early recordings, particularly 'Alone,' have occasionally been rediscovered or covered by other artists in the years since.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
