Vilas Boas formed in Recife, Brazil in the late 1970s around singer and guitarist Luiz Caldas, bassist Roberto Barreto, and drummer Paulo Sampaio. They mixed traditional Northeastern rhythms with rock elements, which gave them a distinct sound in the local scene.
Their 1981 debut album featured the title track "Sonho Bom," a song about love and hope that became popular across Brazil. Caldas's lyrics and stage presence sometimes drew criticism from more conservative listeners during this period.
After their initial success, the band kept recording through the 1980s and early 1990s, with albums like "Fogo no Parquinho" and "Viva a Vida." Keyboardist Nilton Freixo joined in later years. Their music incorporated funk and reggae influences as they continued working.
