They put out their first album in 2001, which included the track 'Viola Quebrada' that gave the band its name. That self-titled debut mixed older sounds with more contemporary arrangements, and it caught some attention for how it handled those elements.
Later records like 'Terra Vermelha' in 2003 and 'Alma Brasileira' in 2007 continued in a similar vein. The band's lineup shifted over time, but bassist and vocalist Felipe Boaventura, percussionist Alexandre Pires, and guitarist André Godinho remained at its center. Their songs sometimes addressed social and environmental themes, which brought them both listeners and some pushback.
