A Brazilian metal band that mixed thrash and progressive rock in the late '80s and early '90s.
For a quick sense of their sound, try 'Living for the Night' or 'Chains of My Life.' That's the blend of thrash energy and Matos's soaring vocals they were known for.
Viper mattered because they were part of that wave of Brazilian metal that actually got heard outside South America. Songs like 'Living for the Night' from their 1992 album 'Evolution' became a calling card. André Matos's voice, which sometimes drew comparisons to Ronnie James Dio, gave their power metal a distinct, theatrical edge.
They formed in São Paulo in 1985 and put out their debut 'Soldiers of Sunrise' in 1987. They toured South America and Europe, and by the time 'Evolution' came out in 1992, they had built a solid following in the scene.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
