Background notes

Archive material and source history

Virtus formed in Naples in 1998. The group included keyboardist Davide Esposito, guitarist Salvatore "Ninotto" De Chiara, bassist Renato Zero, and drummer Paolo Vitale. Their debut album "Mi Piacia Na Uagliuna" came out the following year, with the title track becoming their most recognizable song.

That song, along with others like "Na Gioia Interiora" and "Simu e Sant'Andria," drew from traditional Neapolitan folk music. Their work was sometimes criticized as too commercial, and at one point a song was associated with local organized crime, though the band denied any connection.

They kept recording through the 2000s, putting out albums with titles like "Tu Non Sei Na Cumpagna," "Tu Sai Starna," and "Il Mio Regalo."
