Virulence formed in New Jersey in 1997, playing extreme metal. Their debut album 'The Jeering of the Damned' came out in 2001, establishing their sound with technical playing and lyrics that looked inward. The band went through a breakup around 2003 over legal issues with their music rights, but guitarist Darren Bermudes and drummer Kevin Talley started it up again in 2006 with new people.
They've put out several albums since reforming, including 'A Discordant Note' in 2004, a self-titled record in 2007, 'The Essence of Corruption' in 2012, and 'Descend into Madness' in 2018. Songs like 'Cementing With Introspection' and 'Evolutionary Masquerade' show their tendency to write about mental struggles and personal darkness without resorting to typical metal clichés.
The current lineup includes Bermudes and Talley along with vocalist Taylor Nordberg, guitarist Grant Luoma, and bassist Travis Ryan. Their music stays rooted in that technical, aggressive style they began with, but the lyrics often give it a more thoughtful edge than you might expect from the genre.
