Vitamin String Quartet formed in 1999 in New York City with four classically trained musicians. They started arranging popular songs for strings, a straightforward idea that caught on. Their catalog includes covers of artists from Taylor Swift to Nirvana, and they've released albums like "Vitamin String Quartet Plays Lady Gaga" in 2009 and "VSQ Performs Radiohead" in 2010.
Their version of Ariana Grande's "Thank u, Next" got attention in 2019. Among their tracks are string arrangements of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and "Alejandro," Iron Maiden's "Fear Of The Dark," and Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours." They also covered "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" by Iron & Wine.
Some listeners have questioned whether pop songs belong in a string quartet format, but VSQ has kept at it. They work quietly, turning familiar melodies into instrumental pieces without much fuss about bridging gaps or making statements.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
