Vítor da Trindade e Carlos Caçapava

Vítor da Trindade and Carlos Caçapava were a Brazilian duo who worked together in the 1970s. Their most significant recording was 'Zumbi,' a song about the leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, a community of escaped slaves in colonial Brazil. They wrote and self-released it in 1976.

Vítor da Trindade was from Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais, and Carlos Caçapava was from São Paulo. They met in 1975 and decided to write about Zumbi dos Palmares. The song's subject matter was considered sensitive at the time, and they reportedly faced some resistance from record labels before putting it out themselves.

'Zumbi' became their defining work. It appeared on their debut album, which also included songs like 'A Saia da Carolina [isto É Bom]' and 'A Velhinha do Angu.' The track's direct engagement with Brazil's history of slavery and resistance gave it a lasting place in the country's musical landscape.
