Viviane formed in 1996 as a Portuguese band with four members: Viviane on lead vocals and guitar, Manuel Luís on acoustic guitar, José Luís on bass, and Rui Sá on drums. Their debut album 'Terra' came out in 2000, mixing traditional folk melodies with modern arrangements. They've released six studio albums through 2013, including 'Recomeçar' in 2010.
Their song 'Recomeçar' became particularly well-known, along with tracks like 'Deixei a Janela Entreaberta' and 'Fado do Beijo.' Their lyrics often touch on love, loss, and resilience, drawing from everyday experiences.
Some critics questioned whether they were commercializing traditional Portuguese folk music, but the band kept reinterpreting traditional songs in their own style. They worked through that period without major lineup changes, maintaining their core sound across those albums.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
