Vocal Makamba formed in the late 1980s, drawing from Congolese rumba and soukous traditions. Their name comes from a town in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo where some members were from. They released albums like 'Akekho Ofana' in 1990, followed by 'Lokole' in 1992 and 'Zonga' in 1994.
Their song 'Akekho Ofana' became particularly well-known. Other tracks like 'Yu Wiza', 'Cristo Virá', 'Ndaniele', and 'Se Eu Orar' show the range of their catalog. The band's music sometimes addressed social and political themes, which led to occasional friction with authorities in the DRC's challenging political climate.
Papa Wemba served as lead vocalist at times, and Koffi Olomide was also involved with the group. Their sound featured the vocal harmonies and rhythmic patterns characteristic of Central African popular music from that period.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
