Background notes

Archive material and source history

Voodoo Popeye came together in Louisville, Kentucky in the late 1990s. Their music pulled from voodoo themes and Southern Gothic atmosphere, with a sound that leaned into psychedelic rock. The band's core lineup included John Dunn on vocals and guitar, Mark Smeltzer on bass, and Michael Butler on drums.

They released their debut album 'Voodoo Installer' in 1998, which included the track 'Voodoo Instalater.' This was followed by 'Grave New World' in 2000 and 'Hex' in 2002, the latter being a concept album narrated by a voodoo priestess. Their self-titled album arrived in 2005.

Their live shows were known for elaborate staging and visuals that some found unsettling. The lyrics often dealt with occult and macabre subjects, which drew criticism from some quarters while building a dedicated following among others who connected with that approach.
