Archive material and source history
Vroom formed in London in 1995 with Kate Walsh on vocals, Mark Lane on guitar, Richard Thomas on bass, and Paul Mills on drums. Their debut album 'One Step Forward' came out in 1997. Walsh's lyrics sometimes touched on personal struggles, which drew both attention and criticism.
Their song '25 Years' became particularly well-known. Walsh wrote it after a conversation with her father, and its straightforward melody and direct lyrics connected with listeners. Other tracks like 'Sex And Money' and 'Bored With Overindulgence, Poverty Became Fashionable' show the band's range from pop hooks to more pointed observations.
In 2002, Thomas and Mills left the band. Walsh and Lane continued with new members James Curry on bass and David Cox on drums.
