V.R.P. formed in Lyon in 1979, taking their name from the French acronym for traveling salesman. Their debut album 'Le Roi de la Route' came out in 1982 and became something of a cult favorite. The band's frontman was Dominique "Chibau" Chibaudi.
Their songs like 'Le Roi De La Route' and 'Les Livres De Fesses' had a raw, energetic quality that drew from punk and rock. The lyrics often dealt with social themes, which sometimes got them into trouble with radio stations. They kept recording and playing for decades, with a sound that gradually incorporated more melodic elements.
Other members included Gérald "Piero" Alban on bass, Patrick "Patou" Boulanger on drums, and Jean-Pierre "Jipé" Chambon on keyboards and saxophone. They maintained a steady presence in French rock circles without much mainstream fuss.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
