Waa Wei formed in 2012 in Malang, East Java, with four members: Yusran on vocals and guitar, Jerry on guitar and backing vocals, Alva on bass, and Kunto on drums. They put out their debut EP 'Falling Apart' in 2015. Their sound had some jangly pop textures early on, drawing from bands like The Smiths and Cocteau Twins.
In 2017, the single 'Have a Nice Day' caught on widely in Indonesia, becoming something of an anthem. That led to more touring and a second EP called 'Springtime' in 2018. They released albums in 2020 and 2022, but the band faced some criticism along the way, with some listeners calling their music too emo or depressing. They kept making music anyway.
