Wabarte formed in 1995 in Brazzaville, Congo-Brazzaville, with musicians from the Bateke ethnic group. The band's name comes from a Bateke word meaning "teamwork." They started by playing at local gatherings and competitions before getting help from a producer to release their first album in 2000.
Their 2002 album "Watsa Volley Ball" brought them wider attention. The title track became popular internationally, with its energetic rhythm connecting with volleyball fans. After that, they put out albums like "Souvenir" in 2004, "Paris-Brazzaville" in 2006, and "Viva Africa" in 2010.
Wabarte has worked with other musicians including Manu Dibango, Youssou N'Dour, and Angélique Kidjo.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
