Wacław Święcicki was born in Warsaw in 1894. He's remembered for writing the lyrics to 'Warszawianka' in 1905, during the First Russian Revolution. The music was composed by Stanisław Rospond.

'Warszawianka' became a symbol of Polish resistance, and Russian authorities tried to ban it. Święcicki later led the Warsaw Song and Dance Ensemble 'Śląsk' for about twenty years, performing the anthem with them.

He died in 1992. The song remains widely known in Poland.
