Waiting For Smith started as a project for Thomas Bieling in Berlin around 2005. He put together a trio with guitarist Florian Geißel and bassist Johannes Daun, and they released their first album 'Four' in 2008. The record got some attention for its quiet, personal feel, and they ended up playing shows with bigger acts like Bon Iver and Coldplay.
By 2011, Geißel and Daun had left, leaving Bieling to carry on with new musicians. The band's self-titled second album came out in 2013, leaning into a more reflective sound. A song like 'Song For Grace' gives a sense of that inward turn.
There was some noise in 2014 when the group worked on a campaign with the German Federal Ministry of Defense, which didn't sit well with parts of their audience. After that, the public story gets thinner. Bieling kept the name going, but the details from the later years are less clear.
