Editor's note

Waiverleich's Brazilian rock with folk currents

A Belo Horizonte quartet that carved out space in Brazil's rock scene with albums like 'Paraíso Proibido'.

For a sense of their sound, 'Tua Presença' and 'Tu És Fiel' are good places to start. They frame that mix of rock drive and something more grounded.

They came up in the early 2000s with a sound that wasn't just straight alternative rock, it had Brazilian folk textures woven in. Songs like 'Tua Presença' show how they handled that blend, and they kept putting out records even as the lineup shifted over the years. It's a specific corner of Brazil's rock story from that period.

They started as a quartet in Belo Horizonte and released their debut 'Paraíso Proibido' in 2005. The rhythm section changed a couple times after that, but they kept recording albums like 'O Ninho' and 'Lume' into the 2010s.

Waiverleich formed in Belo Horizonte in the early 2000s as a quartet with Lucas Silveira on vocals and guitar, Sueo Cavalcante on guitar, Pedro Almeida on bass, and Gabriel Candido on drums. Their debut album 'Paraíso Proibido' came out in 2005 and helped establish them in Brazil's rock scene.

After Candido left in 2008, Joca Pontes joined on drums. The band kept recording through lineup changes, putting out albums like 'O Ninho' in 2007, 'Lume' in 2011, and 'Noites de Fé' in 2015. Their songs include 'Tu És Fiel' and 'Tua Presença'.

By 2012, Pontes had also departed, with Daniel Costa taking over on drums. The group's sound mixed alternative rock with Brazilian folk influences.
